Ascui in to bat for cricket inclusion

In 2018 both organisations partnered to provide work placement opportunities for students undertaking the Certificate I in Work Education (Sport Academy) course.

Candidates for the work placement have a passion for working in sport or enhancing their overall athletic abilities.

Throughout this course the students get the opportunity to do a number of work integrated learning and practical placement opportunities in the sport industry.

In the 2018-19 season, Cricket Victoria was introduced to Andre Ascui who completed two weeks’ administration work assisting the Participation, Community Development and Diversity team. Andre then went on to work with the Melbourne Stars throughout their season, assisting with all home games at the MCG.

Andre then went on to act as the MC at Cricket Victoria’s International Day for People with a Disability Breakfast event and says the overall cricket experience has been positive.

“I’ve been doing lots of administration work in the office and cricket coaching for kids who wanted and helped organise the Special Schools cricket cup while attending meetings with staff members to talk about how to make cricket more inclusive,” Ascui said.

Ascui was subsequently given a casual role with Cricket Victoria which has allowed him to continue his good work.

“I’m really loving my time here with all the staff members because I get treated so well and I feel like I am a part of the Cricket Victoria family. I’m looking forward to continuing to work hard and to help my fellow colleagues to get to know me better for the person who I am.

“I’m excited to get the cricket season more into shape and to help Victorian cricket continue to be more inclusive and diverse.”
