Harmony in Cricket takes hold

In conjunction with Sri Lanka Unites Australia – a youth movement for the hope and reconciliation of the youth of Sri Lanka – Cricket Victoria organised for 64 young Australians of Sri Lankan descent to partake on-field in a game of cricket.

Participants showed their excitement as they took to the hallowed turf, wearing an orange Harmony in Cricket t-shirt, as well as a SLUA wrist band.

“We feel that this is very important for the Sri Lankan community because cricket is something that continues to bring us together,” President of Sri Lanka Unites Prashan De Visser said.

“(The Harmony in Cricket message) is something that sustains us as a country. It’s not just something that we unite over for a little while; it’s something that helps us create an identity.

“We’re proud to be here and honoured by this opportunity.”

On the night, Cricket Victoria also hosted a hospitality function themed around Harmony in Cricket, where Chief Executive Officer Tony Dodemaide acknowledged the importance of the event.

“We recognise that Australian society is becoming more diverse, and that is certainly true in Melbourne, so, we need to attract as many new people into the game as possible,” Mr Dodemaide said.

“We know what a great sport it can be to build character, to build relationships, to build community and so cricket is a great way of introducing and welcoming new people into a community.”

Harmony in Cricket operates on the philosophy that “our club is a place where everybody, regardless of their cultural background, religion, age, gender or ability feels welcome. If a person has a passion for cricket, our club has a place for them.”
