Having started on March 14, the Twenty20 competition runs for eight weeks and encompasses 32 teams with participants varying in cultural backgrounds.
The round-robin tournament sees teams divided into four groups, playing seven preliminary rounds across five locations in the west, with first prize being $5000.
Pioneered by Wyndham Jags Cricket Club, the JPL has created an opportunity for teams from the South Asian community to play together in a structured competition with support from Cricket Victoria, the Wyndham City Council and the Western Suburbs United Churches Cricket Association.
“After the huge success of JPL last year, our tournament has successfully developed a niche cricket community as well as a network platform for cricketers to enjoy the game they love in a fun, shorter format where the weather is never an issue,” JPL Chairman Jay Mohan Padmanabhan said.
“JPL is a Twenty20 cricket tournament organised with a vision to develop and promote multicultural, recreation and social activities among different community groups through Australia’s favourite sport, cricket.
“These multicultural activities help in developing friendship and understanding among the different community groups.”
Last year, Soorya Cricket Club was crowned the inaugural Jags JPL champions after defeating the Western Tigers.
Both teams are back this season with the competition doubling, expanding from 16 teams to 32.
After the first two rounds of the 2015 season, the Destroyers sit at the top of the ladder, claiming their first two wins along with Singh Sabha who are also undefeated.
