Vikings squad unveiled

Having been introduced in 2007, this year’s carnival saw a record number of participants, with 20 teams competing in two forms of the game – Ten Over Tonk and Super League.

Throughout the day, teams competed in a round-robin competition, with Altona being crowned as the Super League champions after defeating the Croydon Ranges Kookaburras in the final.

At days end, the Victorian Vikings were selected from the Super League competition with the Grampians’ Gavan Hicks being named captain of the side.

“It’s a true honour to be named captain,” Hicks said.

Among the attendees on the day was Commonwealth Bank Bushranger Darren Pattinson and City of Casey councilors Geoff Ablett and Amanda Stapleton.

Pattinson, who came along to show his support to the participants, provided words of encouragement, posed for photos and signed autographs.

“I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of good cricket today and the guys enjoying themselves,” the English Test paceman said.

For the past six years Cranbourne Cricket Club and Casey-South Melbourne Cricket Club has hosted the event, acknowledging it as an important day on the state’s cricketing calendar.

“It’s a day that the players can get out and play cricket, just like everyone else does,” Cranbourne Cricket Club president Shaun Petrie said.

“You can see on their faces that they have an absolute ball.”

Member of The Lord’s Taverners, Ian Crawford, also came along to show his support as the primary sponsor of the event.

“Thanks to all the people that made it possible, including Cricket Victoria and their staff, the City of Casey for providing a wonderful facility and also the individual clubs in Casey-South Melbourne and the Cranbourne Cricket Club,” Crawford said.

“We are delighted to be involved in this event.”
