A history making win

In just their second game of the carnival, the Victorians clinched a 34-run victory over Western Australia thanks to a fine all-round effort.

Having lost the toss and being sent into bat, Victoria completed its innings on 5-77, with co-captains Renee Melton (25*) and Fiona Hale (22) leading the way.

A disciplined bowling attack, led by Kareena Jacobsen-Logan (3-6) and Natalie Plane (2-15) saw the Victorians write themselves into the history books, claiming their first Imparja Cup win.

“It was really great to get our first ever win,” Co-coach Di Day said.

“The fielding was sharp, the energy was up and the batting efforts were focused.

“Victoria should be very proud because the girls are representing their state exceptionally.”

In their first game of the carnival, the young Victorian team sent the Northern Territory into bat.

A 40-run knock from Pennyrose Wiggins saw the Northern Terriory complete their innings on 6-101.

Veteran Hale (3-10) was the pick of the bowlers ,while Ringwood Cricket Club’s Hayley Chandler (1-24) claimed Victoria’s first ever tournament wicket.

In return, a 31-run knock from Melton wasn’t enough to secure a Victorian victory, dismissed for 70.

“It’s such a young team so our first game gave the girls the chance to learn how to play together and identify our strengths and weaknesses,” Day said.

“We lost the game but there were a lot of outcomes that we think we can build on.”

Victoria will next face New South Wales today.
