Indigenous squad returns from India

The 12-man squad was given the chance to develop their skills against three of India’s high standard cricket clubs.

Facing many challenges, including weather conditions and difficult spin bowling, the team managed to complete the tour with three out of five wins.

“It was a big task to bat against the spinners especially with such a turning wicket,” Victorian captain Ben Abbatangelo said.

While competing in the tournament, the team held cricket clinics at the country’s Global Cricket schools to teach children bowling, batting and fielding techniques.

“Dealing with the playing conditions was quite hard because it was really hot and humid,” fellow Victorian tourist Fletcher Stewart said.

“The kids were pretty excited, especially when we gave out the passing certificates for the course.”

As well as having a strong cricket focus, the tour also encouraged players to experience the Indian culture with a trip to the nation’s largest slum.

“It was a massive eye opener,” Abbatangelo said.

“They don’t have a lot but everyone is just so carefree.”

“It definitely puts where you are in life into perspective.”

Members of the team also travelled to Delhi to attend the Australian Government’s OzFest, a four-month celebration of contemporary Australian culture in 18 Indian cities.

Players went to the opening ceremony, leant a hand at cricket clinics and met Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

“It was really cool being introduced to the most powerful person in the country,” Abbatangelo said.

Aside from the cricket and cultural aspects, the tour provided an opportunity for the team to bond and learn from each other.

“It was good for the younger guys to learn from the experienced players,” Stewart said.
