Worawa make stunning debut

Worawa Aboriginal College has made a stunning debut at the Yarra MILO T20 Blast School Cup Carnival by claiming victory in this year’s Final.

Despite having never competed in a cricket tournament, Worawa stunned the competition as it claimed its first three matches with an average winning margin of 130 runs.

Advancing to the Final, Worawa produced another dominate performance to snare a 40-run victory.

“We are all really proud of the girls,” Cricket Victoria Female Youth Program Officer Di Day said.

“They really don’t know how naturally good they are.

“To compete in their first ever carnival and come out as victors is an extraordinary effort.”

Based in Healesville, the Aboriginal College in Years 7-10 is comprised of girls from across the country, who collectively speak more than 330 native languages.

Five weeks ago cricket was a foreign sport to them.

Under the guidance of Day and a number of SEDA students, a four-week program was introduced to the school to provide the girls with a taste of the sport and to introduce them the fundamentals of cricket.

“At Cricket Victoria we are committed to increasing participation opportunities for Indigenous people,” Day said.

“The girls have been improving each week and really enjoy playing the game.”

Worawa College has now qualified to compete in the East Regional Final on Tuesday, November 19 in Endeavour Hills for a spot in the state Final at the MCG.
