Aussie U-19s buckle in final

Routed for just 75 inside 25 overs after being set in by the visitors, Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers rookie Matt Short was the only batsman to put up any form of resistance as he top-scored with 25 from 27 balls including three boundaries.

In reply, India required just 93 balls to chase down the modest target as they clinched victory with eight wickets in hand.

Victorian quick Matt Fotia finished with 0-31 from five overs, but enjoyed a fine campaign with 10 wickets at 20.30 to stamp his papers as a player of the future.

Short finished with 166 runs at 27.66 but will be ruing his failure to convert any of his six starts at the tournament in to a score of note.

“Early signs suggest that talent is not the problem. It will come down to how much is learnt from the experiences; then it is down to commitment, desire and execution,” Cricket Australia National Talent Manager Greg Chappell said.

“(Short) has shown enormous potential as a stroke player and is also a promising off-spin bowler who fields well. He has already been recognised by Cricket Victoria with a rookie contract for next season.

“(Fotia) is a strongly built young man who likes to bowl fast and who loves a chat.”
