Vale Lindsay Kline

Kline was one of only seven Victorians to have taken a Test hat trick in his time, joining Siddle, Warne, Damien Fleming, Hugh Trumble, Jimmy Matthews and Merv Hughes.

The chinaman bowler represented Australia in 13 Tests, nine of them overseas where he was notably successful (31 wickets at 15.35). He took a hat-trick in his second Test, in Cape Town in 1957-58, but is best remembered for facing the last ball of the first tied Test, against West Indies at Brisbane in the 1960-61 series. He also denied West Indies for 100 minutes as Australia held on for a draw at Adelaide in the same series. It was his last act in Test cricket.

Kline played 11 seasons for Melbourne in Premier Cricket from 1952-53 to 1962-63, in 76 matches, taking 169 wickets at 18.60. He led Melbourne to the Premiership in 1958-59 when he claimed 7-78 in the Final

Kline played a total of 88 first-class matches taking 276 wickets at 27.39.

Away from the cricket field Kline established and ran a successful company manufacturing and supplying fire equipment in Melbourne.

Cricket Victoria Chief Executive Officer Tony Dodemaide passed on his deepest sympathies to the Kline family and friends.

“Lindsay was a fantastic man who will be sorely missed. His contribution to Cricket not only at a national level but also within the state will be something he will be forever remembered.

“An absolute gentlemen of his era, Lindsay was able to be part of some moments that will be cherished forever in cricket history.”

“Cricket has lost a number of our beloved members this year who contributed to the growth of our great game..

“On behalf of the cricket community in Victoria we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Stella, the Kline family and friends at this sad time.”
