Boxing Day Test Memorable Moments #2 – Warne’s hat trick

In the lead in to the 2012 Boxing Day Test, Cricket Victoria is counting down the 20 most memorable moments from the MCG.

Named one of the seven wonders of the sporting world in 2009, the ‘G plays hosts to Victoria’s international schedule each year and the Boxing Day Test is the jewel in the international calendar.

Shane Warne joined an exclusive club of Victorians, with Hugh Trumble, Jimmy Matthews, Lindsay Kline, Merv Hughes and Damien Fleming, when he claimed a hat-trick in the 1994 Boxing Day Test.

The leg-spinner trapped Phil DeFreitas, had Darren Gough caught behind then a flying David Boon snaffled a catch at short-leg to complete the feat.

Warne delivered a top-spinner that caught Devon Malcolm’s glove and lobbed to the right of Boon who flung himself and captured it one-handed.

Australia entered the Test with a 1-0 lead in the series after winning comfortably in Brisbane in the opening fixture with Warne claiming 11-110.

Honours were split after the first-innings with Australia posting 279, Steve Waugh unbeaten on 94 and Darren Gough claiming 4-60.

Warne continued to weave a spell over the Englishman, capturing 6-64 in their first dig as the home side took a 67-run lead into their second innings.

A David Boon century (131) set up the total for the Australians, setting England 520 to win.

Craig McDermott tore through the English top-order to leave the tourists 6-91 before Warne claimed his hat-trick and with it, a 295-run victory to Australia.

After the MCG clash, Warne had played eight Tests against England and had claimed 54 wickets at an average of 19.76.
