Boxing Day Test Memorable Moments #7 鈥 Umpire Hair calls Murali

In the lead in to the 2012 Boxing Day Test, Cricket Victoria is counting down the 20 most memorable moments from the MCG.

Named one of the seven wonders of the sporting world in 2009, the ‘G plays hosts to Victoria’s international schedule each year and the Boxing Day Test is the jewel in the international calendar.

The 23-year-old spinner, who had played 22 Tests and taken 80 wickets, was called seven times in three overs by Hair before he switched ends.

The incident occurred in the middle of a forgettable match for the tourists who were comfortably beaten by 10 wickets.

Sent in by Sri Lankan skipper Arjuna Ranatunga, Australia ground out 6-500, batting for nearly two days, with Steve Waugh scoring an unbeaten 131 and David Boon batting for seven hours for his 110.

Muralidaran, who took 1-124 from 38 overs, was called for throwing on day two with most spectators at the ground not realising what was occurring.

Sri Lanka could muster just 233 in reply to the Australians who enforced the follow on and knocked over the tourists again for 307, Glenn McGrath collecting 7-132 for the match and Shane Warne snaring 5-120.

Set 41 to win, Australia’s openers had no trouble, knocking off the target in eight overs.
Muralidaran was called again later in the summer in Brisbane by umpires Ross Emerson and Tony McQuillan.

Emerson would call Muralidaran again on Sri Lanka’s following tour in 1999.

The Sri Lankan spinner went on to take a record 800 Test wickets in 133 matches.
