Box Hill claim ultimate prize

After keeping the Bombers to a total of 172, an unbeaten 55 from under-18 representative Sarah Chancellor-Goddard steered the Mustangs to its second title of the season.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Essendon Maribyrnong Park was in early trouble with Box Hill captain Anna Lanning scalping Natalie Schilov (0) in the opening over to leave the Bombers at 1-1.

A captain’s knock from Briana Binch (55) saw the Bombers steady the ship. However, a three-wicket haul from Monique Draycott (3-28) saw the momentum swing with the Mustangs spurring a mini batting collapse to claim 4-15.

A late-innings surge from Jane Neil (31*) saw the Bombers post a score of 172.

In reply, Box Hill started in a similar fashion to EMP, losing opener Casey Hawley for two. Rebecca Carter (31) and Cassie Brock (24) saw the run rate lift, combining for a 55-run partnership.

However, tight bowling from the Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit’s Emma Kearney (3-25), Molly Strano (2-28) and Emily McIntyre (1-37) put the Mustangs back on the back foot.

Young Chancellor-Goddard then combined with Laura Shaw (28*) to take the game to a nail-biting finish.

Requiring two runs off the final two balls, a sweep from Chancellor-Goddard saw the ball reach the boundary to take the Mustangs to victory.

“It was an amazing feeling to get the win,” Lanning said.

“We have been in the last four grand finals so to win one was special.

“We looked like we were gone but Sarah Chancellor-Goddard has got a lot of talent and combined well with Laura Shaw to put on a 70-run partnership that got us over the line.”

Chancellor-Goddard was awarded the Betty Wilson Medal for her match-winning knock.
