The right decision

After relocating to Doreen last year, Mernda lost a significant amount of cricket balls due to a lake being situated directly next to its home ground.

With the high possibility of it happening again, Mernda needed to plan ahead.

“We’ve had to move ovals because our old ground has been really dry and we just couldn’t use the cricket nets.” Mernda Cricket Club’s Warwick Steele said.

“With the creek so close, we were losing up to five cricket balls a week.”

Having four senior teams, three junior teams and a MILO in2CRICKET program, the Mernda Cricket Club needed to find a way to produce training balls for the up-coming season.

After holding a committee meeting, the club concluded that it was going to be expensive to keep purchasing new balls and looked for an alternative method.

With assistance from Cricket Victoria’s umpiring department, Mernda inherited 18 cricket balls.

“This will save us a lot of money for a club in a growing corridor,” Steele said.

“It is really important for our club. We are just really grateful.”
