Bruton snares 7-5 in Twenty20

With a number of notable performances headlining the action on the opening day of the competition, Bruton, who registered 55 (48) with the bat, destroyed East Metro with the ball as she registered figures of 7-5 from her four overs.

Not surprisingly, the Highlanders defeated East Metro in the morning Twenty20 before making it two from two in the afternoon, restricting North Metro to 6-88 in reply to their total of 3-115.

In other games, Gippsland and Northern Rivers registered a thrilling tie.

While at Harry Trott Oval, a star-studded South East Metro line-up, which included under-18 state representatives Charlotte Killeen and Alana King, easily accounted for North East Knights, chalking up 1-122 in reply to the Knights’ 59.

South West had a mixed day, dropping the morning Twenty20 South East Sharks, before bouncing back with a commanding win against Western Waves in the afternoon.

Nicola Hancock, another member of the Victorian under-18 team, enjoyed an outstanding day, notching up an unbeaten 60 and 40 not out to lead the competition in runs.

During an incredible afternoon session, North East Knights bowled fantastically well to defend their small total of 65 on a deteriorating Ian Johnson Oval wicket.

The Knights managed to bowl out the Northern Rivers for just 48 to claim their first win of the competition.

Other results included Gippsland chasing down the South East Sharks and South East Metro accounting for East in a high scoring affair at Harry Trott.

After two rounds, the competition is still wide open, with seven teams within a win of top spot.

Today’s one-day fixtures promise to see some of the state’s best players strut their stuff in the longer format.
