Country takes honours

Playing two Twenty20s, Country took the points in their first match while Metro claimed their first win in the last game of the series.

The day opened with the Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit’s Sophie Molineux again leading the runs, top-scoring with 49.

With assistance from Northern Rivers’ Hope Irvine (44*), the Country reached a total of 2-125 with the North West Wizards’ Kiara Jones (2-17) being the sole wicket-taker for the Metro.

Molineux again starred in the Country attack snaring 2-6 along with the Central Highlands’ Jacinta Goodger-Chandler, who took 2-18, leaving the Metro at 7-90 after 20 overs and falling short of victory by 35 runs.

Regrouping for their second match of the day, the South East Sharks’ Grace Mills smashed an unbeaten 36 to take the Metro to 3-110.

Despite an unbeaten half-century from Molineux, the Metro attack managed to hold off the Country batting line-up to restrict them to 6-107 and claim a three run win – their first of the series.

The Sharks’ Primrose Wohlers was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2-25.

In the Under-15 Country and Metro series, Country won the toss and elected to bat in yesterday’s 40-over game.

The Highlands’ Sophie Van De Heuvel opened the batting and smashed 71 off 85 balls to take the Country to 8-194 with the Western Waves’ Rosie Wynd (34) and the Sharks’ Sam Ryan (27) providing solid contributions.

In reply, the Country attack was too potent for the Metro batting line-up, dismissing the team for 90 to take a 105-run victory as well as a 2-1 series win.

The Wizards’ Stephanie Lewis top-scored for the Metro with 24 while Wynd (2-14) and the Highlands’ Bianca McKay (2-12) and Choney Meemusour (2-12) were among the wicket-takers.
