Victoria continues to dominate

Remaining unbeaten in the tournament, Victoria posted 4-114 from its 20 overs after impressive individual performances from skipper Annabel Martin and Bella Gietzmann.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, Victoria slumped to 2-17 in the third over before staging a fight back.

Despite the loss of Claire Wilson (12) and Amy Yates (0), Jessica Karamoshou (17) joined Martin (39) in the middle as the pair built a 48-run partnership.

With Martin moving past 200 runs for the Championships, Georgia Wareham finished unbeaten on 23 from 25 balls including three boundaries as she proved the ideal finisher at the death of the innings.

In reply, Gietzmann (3-7) triggered a Queensland collapse as she tore through the Maroons’ batting line-up.

Victorian coach John Hayes was impressed with Gietzmann’s performance, who was selected as a bottom age player for this year’s campaign.

“She bowled a good spell, getting a wicket in each of her overs,” Hayes said.

“She did really well. Being a bottom age player it’s great that she can get exposure to different contests.”

While Samantha Dixon (31) kept Queensland in the contest, her dismissal at the hands of Gietzmann ensured Victoria restricted its opponents to 8-75.

Hayleigh Brennan (1-14), Madeleine Wright (1-11) and Sophie Van De Heuvel (1-5) all finished in the wickets.

“It was a tough match,” Hayes revealed.

“They made us work hard. They probably missed four or five run outs when we were batting and had they taken advantage of some situations we would have been in a lot of trouble.”

With five consecutive wins under their belt, Hayes said that his squad’s mindset is on the game ahead, rather than on the possibility of emerging champions on Tuesday.

“They are aware of it but we don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves,” he said.

“We have a game against ACT, so that’s what our focus is right now.”

Victoria will meet the ACT in Sydney today as it continues it National Championships campaign.
