Haileybury go undefeated to take out Premier Schools Shield

Haileybury claimed the 2018 Premier Schools Shield on Wednesday, defeating Penleigh & Essendon Grammar by 87 runs.

Both teams had gone into the final after breezing through the pool stage undefeated, but Haileybury were too strong throughout the T20 competition and kept their winning record in the Grand Final, played at Penleigh & Essendon Grammar in Keilor East.

Batting first, Haileybury made 7/147 off their 20 overs before rolling through Penleigh & Essendon Grammar, bowling them out for 60.

Half-centuries to Jaryd Wills and Robbie Strong proved the difference between the two sides. Wills made an explosive 52 runs off 28 balls and was ably supported by Strong who made 51 runs off 44 balls.

The seventh Premier Schools Shield began on Tuesday this week, with seven of the best school based senior teams (Haileybury, St. Bernard’s College, Ballarat Grammar, Luther College, Penleigh & Essendon Grammar, St. Michael’s Grammar and Mackillop College) from around Victoria battling it out for the coveted Shield.

The premier school team from each of the Victorian secondary school sport associations is invited to participate in the competition.

The teams are then split into two pools, with the winners of each pool facing off in the Grand Final to decide the winner.

Congratulations to Haileybury on winning the Premier Schools Shield and to all teams that competed in the competition.
