Female cricket participation in focus at Women & Girls Forum

The forum, which was supported by the Victorian Government, saw female participation in cricket brought to the forefront of the agenda. Key topics of the day addressed the changing face of cricket, why female involvement in cricket is a priority and the ways in which we can inspire more females to be involved.

Veteran broadcaster, Tracey Holmes was the Master of Ceremonies and was joined by several keynote speakers including;

  • Australia’s Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins
  • Head, Office for Women in Sport and Recreation, Bridie O’Donnell
  • Former Australian Cricket Captain and current Head of Junior Cricket (Cricket Australia), Belinda Clark
  • SAS Advisor and Performance Psychologist, Anthony Moffitt
  • Melbourne Stars captain and Victorian Cricket Team Captain, Kristen Beams

The forum provided an opportunity for association and club volunteers, administrators, government and other key stakeholders to have an open dialogue on the challenges and barriers for women participating in cricket, and highlighted sports power to create change when it comes to gender inequality and the benefits of diversity in organisations.

Cricket Victoria’s Head of Female Cricket Sonya Thompson saw the inaugural Women and Girls Forum as an effective measure in promoting change.

“We are really pleased with the outcomes of the Women and Girls Forum. The speakers were excellent and provided some great insights into the current status of women and girls in sport and cricket. The forum highlighted ways we can increase this involvement and outlined the benefits this would have not only for cricket but the broader community,” Thompson said.
