Geelong’s Premier School win

After losing the toss and being sent into bat, Geelong posted a score of 94 which proved too much for Wantirna who finished 12 runs short of victory.

Having made a few changes to the side due to unavailability and injuries, Hayden McMahon and Hugo Bienvenu got Geelong away to a great start with clever running to reach 30 from four overs but it was Geelong’s Will Noall who led from the front to top-score with an unbeaten 24.

“Will adapted to the conditions extremely quickly and realised that you couldn’t go after the ball and had to be patient,” Geelong Grammar team manager David Oman said.

Captain Dylan Hodge was also instrumental for Geelong, contributing in all aspects of the game.

“Dylan batted and bowled well and is one of the best captains we have had in a long time,” Oman said.

Wantirna’s Tyson Henry was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-14 from his four overs as they bowled Geelong out for 94 in the final over.

In reply, Wantirna immediately felt the pressure as Geelong’s Charlie Mann claimed 4-12 from his four overs to restrict Wantirna to 9-83 with Lincoln Wong top-scoring on 18.

“The boys were all ecstatic with the win especially our coach Damian Shanahan as he has been involved with the team for a while,” Oman said.

“The side went on a cricket trip to the UK in 2012 so they are a close-knit group.”

Eight secondary schools were offered a place in the tournament after winning their recent school association competition.
