Baker’s stellar indoor season

After winning this year’s Victorian Super League premiership with Croydon and having also received the Ross Gregory medal – the best and fairest award for division one of the Super League – Baker added to his 2014 accolades with an outstanding performance at his first World Cup.

Menacing with the ball, Baker bowled with genuine pace and late swing, causing problems for all batsman.

“Travis had an outstanding tournament and was a significant all-round contributor to Australia’s World Cup win,” Australian coach Ross Gregory said.

“He rounded out his tournament with clean ball striking and athletic fielding in the front court, creating regular run out opportunities.”

Baker was an integral part of Australia’s World Cup win over host nation New Zealand, with the team finishing the week as undefeated to remain the tournament’s sole winner since its inception in 1995.

During the match, Baker combined with ACT’s Matthew Floros to finish Australia’s batting innings, accumulating 34 runs to take Australia to 149.

In return, quality bowling and two run outs from Baker in the 13th over helped to keep New Zealand to a score of 55, giving Australia the World Cup.

“It was great to get the win,” Gregory said.

“Everyone contributed and played well throughout the week.”

The Australians also showed their dominance in the three other divisions of the tournament, claiming the Open Ladies, Under-20 Boys and Under-20 Girls titles convincingly.

Commenting on her fourth World Cup win, Victorian captain Nicole Martin said that the victory was one to remember.

“The girls showed a lot of discipline throughout the week,” Martin said.

“The also showed a lot of passion together we worked as a team to claim the Cup.”

Winning all four titles has seen Australia remain the benchmark of the sport being the Indoor Cricket World Cup’s sole victor.
