North East cricket hub to be built in Wodonga

The $1.15 million project is a partnership between the State Government, Cricket Victoria, Cricket NSW, Cricket Australia and the Wodonga City Council.

It will become a home for junior pathways programs, local cricket associations and clubs and other community sporting groups.

Building on the current cricket and sporting facilities at Birralee Park, the project will see the construction of a four wicket indoor centre, with unisex changerooms and administration space for Cricket Victoria and Cricket Albury Wodonga.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes MP said: “This amazing new facility at Biralee Park will make Wodonga the epicentre of cricket in North East Victoria,” Ms Symes said.

“The North East Country Cricket and Community Hub will provide our male and female cricketers with the latest facilities where they can hone their skills.

“The Andrews Labor Government is working hard to give more locals in North East Victoria the opportunity to play the sports they love, and embrace a more active and healthy lifestyle and this new facility will certainly provide that.”

North East Victoria is a strong cricket region, with nearly 1,300 participants in 2016-17 and one of the fastest growing participation areas in the state.

Cricket Victoria CEO Andrew Ingleton said the project was another example of cricket’s determination to better support the game and players across regional Victoria by establishing high quality community cricket facilities in key regional hubs.

“It’s great to see the first chapter of the Wodonga project unveiled. This will be an excellent facility for North East Victoria, improving community cricket facilities and increasing the capacity of the cricket workforce and volunteers,” Ingleton said.

The new centre is expected to be open in the next year.
