Coming to big smoke and taking on the best Melbourne has to offer is definitely an opportunity the Western Waves do not take for granted.

Home to some of Victoria’s best young talent including Sam Kerber, Steve Reid and South Australian wicketkeeper Tim Ludeman, the Western Waves have seen plenty of success in recent times – particularly in female cricket where they have secured three premierships in recent memory.

With the best talent the Wimmera have to offer, they come into the Victorian Bushrangers Pathway Championships optimistic they can give sides a run for their money.

“There’s a quiet confidence amongst the group,” tells under-18s manager Steve Mirtschin.

“A lot of these boys played last year and every one of them have played at the Pathways level previously, so there’s no reason why we can’t win some games during the week.

“We’ve got Ben Threlfell who is an excellent leader and a top order batsman. He’ll be good for us along with Hamish Withers in the top six.”

The Waves endured a tough Championship last year, with three wins across the age groups last year.

But under-16s coach John Houston has other ideas this time around.

“Our talent pool is getting better and credit has to go to Regional Cricket Manager Steve Fields,” Houston said.

“We’re putting together a good squad and our aim is to be super competitive.

“We’re a well drilled outfit and we just look to everything 110%.

“The result will always take care of itself.”

In the under-14s, the Waves have plenty to look forward to in the form of Brodie Couch and Joe Reid – both of whom will share the new ball.

Couch, nephew of Brownlow Medallist Paul, has earned the praise of coach Matt Gunther.

“Brodie had a fine carnival last year as a bottom age player so we’re looking forward to see how he goes this time around.”

“Most importantly though, we want to see these boys improve and gel as a group.

“Their enjoyment of the game is paramount to us.”
