Back to Home for McGain

McGain, who ordinarily plies his trade for Prahran, paid a visit as a guest player at his son’s club as part of their Legends and Heroes Twilight Twenty20 clash against Bayswater.

In typical fashion, the former Commonwealth Bank Bushranger weaved his way through the middle order on his way to 4-28, guiding the Blues to a nail-biting win.

Mount Waverley President Brad Sheehan said that regardless of the result McGain’s appearance at the club would have a lasting effect.

“Having Bryce use this opportunity to come to Mount Waverley is really great for the club,” Sheehan said.

“The players really love the chance to chat to him and pick his brain and being out there with him is a really good buzz.”

The 41-year-old, who last year returned to his childhood club Mornington – relished the opportunity to play with the club.

“My son Liam plays at Mount Waverley and I’ve played T20s there as a guest player over the last few years,” McGain said.

“There’s been a big push at Prahran to play in these sort of games in order to get some experience as a guest player.”

The ‘Back to Home’ initiative will see players from the competition return to their home clubs or a designated club twice a season in order to strengthen ties with local communities.

McGain, now a veteran of the True Blues commended Cricket Victoria for the initiative.

“It’s a terrific idea from Cricket Victoria to get back and learn where you’ve come from to play Premier Cricket,” he said.

“I got a chance to go back to Mornington last year and to work with their spinners at training with a bit of scenario work, including the under-16s crop.

“I get a lot out of that – especially when there’s immediate improvement.”

Sheehan believes that McGain’s mere presence will inspire the juniors who attended the match.

“Bryce’s impact on the younger kids is massive because it gives them something to aspire to,” Sheehan said.

“His involvement with coaching in the junior ranks is also really well received amongst the parents and is of great benefit to our club.”
