Blazing start to Bushrangers Pathway Championships

Morrison’s Western Spirit rocketed to the top of Group C, following a percentage boosting win against North West Wizards.

A target of 151 was never going to be enough against a deep Western Spirit batting order, but having reduced their opponents to 4-72, the Wizards looked every chance of forcing an upset.

Morrison’s entrance put these hopes to bed, as he smashed his way past the target score and beyond during a scintillating performance.

Finishing unbeaten on 123, and with the Spirit at 7-261, Morrison demonstrated that his team will be a force to be reckoned with as the tournament unfolds.

In the other performance of the day, Agar led South East Bayside Breaker’s to victory in what was undoubtedly the match of the round against Southern Pioneers.

The match looked all but over when the Pioneers slumped to 7-118 batting first, however, a resilient 95 not out from Akaati Pupuke allowed his side to post a competitive 9-218 from their 50 overs.

In response, the Breakers took their time to get settled before launching at the Pioneers in the middle overs.

Agar, who finished with an unbeaten 102, led from the front to ensure the target was reached with four overs to go, before bringing up his well-deserved century and a first up win for the Breakers.

The bowling performance of the day went to Inner South East Scorpion Julian Beard, who registered 5-33 in a losing side to Outer East Eagles.

In other matches, Central Highlands defeated Barwon Rockets on the back of an excellent bowling performance and a first innings 75 to captain Blayde Baker.

At Frankston, Gippsland Pride’s target of 221 proved too tough a run chase for South East Sharks, while Northern Falcons easily accounted for Inner East Emus at Northcote.

The Under-18 Victorian Bushrangers Pathway Championships will continue across Melbourne today, with the finals hopes of a number of teams resting on a round two victory.
