The Mallee Murray Bulls are no strangers to adversity.

With the largest region in the state, the Victorian Bushrangers Pathway Championships will be the first time a lot of teammates will be playing together in a competitive match.

“The Mallee Murray spans over 350km so it’s obviously tough for us to organise practices and games,” Regional Cricket Manager Andrew Farlie said.

“But we’re confident that we have squads that can compete well and do the region proud.

“That’s our aim – to compete.”

Having struggled in recent years, the Bulls are looking to secure finals births in all three age groups, despite relatively young squads dominated by bottom-age players.

“Last year our under-14s made it to the semi-finals and we were very proud as a region,” Farlie said.

“This year, we’re looking for the same thing from all three of our sides.”

In the under-18s, Farlie hoped that the side could compete with a historically strong group that includes last year’s champions – Central Highlands.

“We’re hoping for a couple of wins this year from the side, having only won the one game last year,” he said.

Despite the young side, Farlie believed the squad would be up for the challenge.

“We’ve got Clayton Holmes and Aidan Calarco who both played last year and really stood up in the pressure,” Farlie said.

“Along with young Braidyn Turner who is a bottom age batsmen, we’re looking for plenty of runs from them.”

The under-16s will this year be predominantly made up of last year’s under-14s outfit that made it to the semi-finals.

“They are the only boys who have made finals for us in our history, so they have a good understanding of what it takes,” Farlie said.

“We’ve got the addition of Lochie O’Brien who is a terrific all round cricketer, so we’ve given ourselves the best chance to progress well into the carnival.”

With the progression of most of last year’s squad, the under-14s also sport a new squad.

“We’ve got a brand new side so it’s really exciting to see the new boys in their first Mallee Murray representative side,” Farlie said.

“Their development is key for us in the later years.”
