2012-13 Finish – Preliminary Finals

A powerhouse in recent times, the South East Bayside Breakers were at their best for much of the 2012-13 Victorian Bushrangers Pathway Championships.

A finalist in the under-18s and undefeated through the group stages of the under-16s and under-14s, the Breakers announced themselves as a force to be reckoned with come this year’s carnival.

New under-18 coach Steve Maxwell will be looking for similar results under his watch, with an emphasis on keeping it simple.

“We just need to control what we can control,” Maxwell said.

“If we can do the basics well, the result will take care of itself.”

With under-19 Victorian representative Shea Gribben poised to lead the Breakers attack alongside Benjamin Earney, Maxwell will be hoping that the St Kilda quick will be able to back up from the national championships.

“Shea’s a terrific bowler and an absolute asset to the squad,” Maxwell said of the young tearaway.

“Ben’s an incredible talent and he bowls a heavy ball. For his age, he possesses raw pace.”

In the under-16s, coach Tom Morris is incredibly excited about the prospects in front of him.

“The vibe has been great around the squad and the boys are really excited,” Morris said.

“We’ve had to change things up a little with the rain but we’re really confident with our squad and we think we can replicate the success we had last year.”

In a contrast to the under-18s, Morris believes his spin attack can be the difference.

“Our spin bowlers are our strength – they all bring something different to the set-up which is exciting to see,” Morris said.

“We’ve got Will Taylor who is a crafty off spinner alongside Dane Heveren who is a leg-spinner out of the Anil Kumble mould. So we’ve got plenty of variety to work with.”

Morris also sees young keeper-batsman Will Pucovski as one to watch.

“He’s a supreme talent,” Morris said of the former under-15 Victorian captain.

“He’s opening the batting in Melbourne’s second XI, so that speaks for itself really.”

In the under-14s, coach Stephen Zayler will be looking to make amends for a championship gone begging last year.

“We lost our quarter-final match because a few lapses in the field, so we’ve worked hard on our fielding to make sure that doesn’t happen again.” Zayler said.

“We dropped a batsman who went on to make a hundred, and that cost us in the end.”

Leading into the up-coming tournament though, Zayler has been impressed with the mood of his squad.

“The boys know each other from school and other walks of life, so it’s been really easy.” Zayler said.

“They know the opportunity that’s in front of them so they’re really excited.”
