CV Academy prevail over Crusaders

Mackenzie Harvey was the star for the Academy with an unbeaten 103* and 45* as the game went right to the final hour with Academy claiming the final Crusaders wicket, trailing by 23 runs, with just six overs remaining.

CV Academy won the toss and elected to bat and were 3-84 at lunch after a strong opening stand of 44 between Matt Foy and Jordan Rossi.

At tea, CV Academy were on 7-191 as Harvey ended the session unbeaten on 57, an innings which included seven fours and a six.

The tea break did little to interrupt the flow of runs for Harvey who finished unbeaten with an impressive 103 off 146 deliveries, including 13 fours and a six.

Following Harvey’s century, CV Academy declared at 9-278 with the hope of snagging an early wicket before the close of play.

The Crusaders managed to negotiate this tricky period to finish the day on 0-27.

On the second day, the U17 bowlers continued their tight bowling as the Crusaders finished the morning session on just 0-44.

The second session of the day saw an increased run rate for the Crusaders but with that came three wickets, as Zac Evans, Blake Parsons and Jack Bouwmeester all claimed one.

The Crusaders were bowled out for 214 by lunch on day three with Wilson McGillivray and Parsons the pick of the bowlers taking 2-15 and 2-36 respectively.

CV Academy went into the second innings with a 64-run lead and had extended it to 146 by tea despite losing three wickets.

CV Academy declared on 8-195 with Harvey remaining unbeaten once again on 45, while Rossi also made 45, setting Crusaders a target of 260 runs from 82 overs.

The Academy’s bowlers produced tight spells and had the Crusaders four down with the score on 56.

The Crusaders fought back and had a potentially match-winning stand of 64 for the seventh-wicket but this left them still requiring 92 runs for victory.

The match was competitive till the end as the Crusaders inched closer to their target but CV took the tenth wicket with the score on 237 and just six overs remaining in the game to secure a 23-run victory.

Jarrad Loughman, Cricket Victoria’s Academy coach said both sides had gained a lot out of the match.

“It was a very well fought game,” Loughman said.

“Macca [Mackenzie] Harvey was the standout with an unbeaten 103 and 45.

“Blake Parsons was the pick of the bowlers in the second dig with four wickets with his left arm orthodox spin.”

Harvey’s superb batting follows his good performance in the U17 National Championships.

Playing in the Grand Final for Victorian Metropolitan against the Cricket Australia XI, Harvey scored 58 runs.
