Falcons take flight in Dowling Shield

Bankrolled by a super century to Roughsedge, who plundered 101, the Falcons chased down the Northern Rivers’ 163 with nonchalant ease.

Cotter provided brilliant support as he finished unbeaten on 70.

Earlier in the day, Roughsedge claimed 3-38 during a super all-round display, while Kyle Green struck with the new ball to finish with 4-20.

Mallee Murray Bulls were just as impressive in Pool D after clinching a 66-run victory against Inner South East Scorpions.

Batting first, the Bulls were dismissed for 163 in the 44th over after openers Campbell Vadlja (32) and Joel Walsh (20) combined for a 56-run opening stand.

Sean Nathan was the pick of the Scorpions’ bowlers with 2-25 from 10 overs, while Jack Gilbert claimed 2-16.

In reply, the Scorpions were rolled for 97 as Jack Thomas finished with 4-16.

An unbeaten century from Hugh McCluggage has steered the Western Waves to the top of Pool B.

McCluggage (100*) and Liam Brown (51*) shared a 115-run partnership as the Waves finished at 6-218 against the Outer East Eagles.

While Mark Butler (39) and Harrison Carter (34) tried valiantly to rescue the Eagles, they were dismissed for 156 in the 45th over.

The Inner East Emus also remain unbeaten in Pool B after clinching a thrilling one-wicket victory against Barwon Rockets.

Set 165 for victory, the Emus appeared headed for a certain victory before wobbling at the death as they crashed from 5-143 to 9-163.

Emus skipper Campbell Lane (61*) held his nerve, however, as he steered his side to victory after Zac Elliott had posted 40 earlier in the day.

The South East Sharks top Pool A after posting the highest score of the opening round against the Southern Pioneers.

Having been sent in by the Pioneers, the Sharks reached 9-232 thanks to fine hands from Brodie Symons (63), Thomas Ewing (45) and Nathan McDonald (36).

Having claimed 2-54 with the ball, Kirk Dickson top-scored for the Pioneers with 76, but a three-wicket haul to Leon Davis (3-35) ensured they were dismissed for 170 inside 38 overs.

South East Bayside Breakers timed their run chase to perfection as they hunted down Gippsland Pride’s 187.

The Pride were dismissed in the final over after contributions from Jack Wrigglesworth (35), Isaac Love (31*), Sam Whibley (29) and Atley Williams (23).

Spin twins Cameron Watts (3-46) and Dane Heverin (2-10) did the bulk of the damage for Bayside.

A 99-run partnership between Patrick Gheller (47) and Joshuah O’Donnell (41) steered Bayside towards victory before their lower order got them home.

North East Knights top Pool D after a disciplined bowling performance with the ball against the Central Highlands.

Having been dismissed for 171, the Knights rolled the Highlands for 127 thanks to 3-12 from Christopher Anderson.

Highlands captain Ryan Baker top-scored with 41.

In the final match, Western Spirit registered a seven-run victory against the North West Wizards.

Having been sent in, the Spirit posted 9-184 after Daniel Venables peeled off 40.

The Wizards would be ruing their performance with the ball after coughing up 45 extras including 28 wides.

Skipper Jack Rennex (32) and Kevin Spaull (36*) almost pulled off a miraculous run chase, however, only to fall marginally short.
