Kerber century fails to save the day

The 18-year-old, who forced his way into the squad after trialing strongly during the Country versus Metro practice matches in Barooga, was the shining light in a run chase which never really threatened the Blues’ imposing total of 7-321 (dec).

Arriving at the crease at 6-63, Kerber shared a 58-run stand with Scott Dixon, who made 44 including four boundaries before falling to off-spinner Soumil Chhibber.

With no one but the tail to bat with, Kerber found an ally in Pat Ashton as the pair built a 107-run partnership that was dominated by the established batsman.

Ashton contributed 28 from 104 balls before being trapped in front and three runs later Kerber fell to the same fate, but not before rattling off 104 from 187 balls including 16 boundaries and a six in a tick under four hours at the crease.

Victoria’s innings closed shortly after for 240.

As a result, Victoria must re-group ahead of its penultimate round-robin match against Queensland tomorrow, but its title ambitions now appear to be extinguished.
