Short hits match-winning century

The Northcote batsman, who was the February nominee for the Commonwealth Bank Future Star Award, notched 113 from just 127 deliveries in the first innings, with 20 boundaries and one six.

On the opening day, Victorian pacemen Ben Ashkenazi (1-52), Matt Fotia (0-46) and Guy Walker (2-56) kept the pressure on the Kiwis as the compiled 9-385 from their 80 overs.

Short, showing the form that saw him named in the Team of the Tournament at the Under-17 National Championships, gave Australia the upper hand as they amassed 4-420 from 80 overs with Tasmanian Sean Willis also notching a century.

Victorian pair Fotia (2-48) and Ashkenazi (0-29) opened the bowling in the second innings and kept the run-rate down, both conceding under four runs an over.

Walker, who was Player of the Tournament at the Under-17 National Championships, proved hard to get away for New Zealand with the quick delivering 13 overs and leaking just 21 runs while also picking up a wicket.

Australia were set 206 to win in the final two sessions and moved Short out of his opening position to give other players an opportunity.

Some early wickets gave New Zealand an opportunity at a victory before Short 16 (15) and Walker 15 (13) chipped in with some crucial runs at the end to see Australia home with three wickets remaining.

Australia will take on New Zealand in three one-day matches on April 4, 6 and 8.
