Title defence remains on track
Combining with Will Pucovski (39) for a 134-run partnership, captain Sam Harper notched 112 from 103 balls to lead Victoria to victory, surpassing Queensland’s total at 8-212.
“Sammy played beautifully,” Victorian assistant coach Jarrad Loughman said.
“For a 16-year-old, he played a mature innings, running well between wickets and batting aggressively when he had to.”
Play resumed on day two of the clash with Victoria needing one final wicket to commence its run chase.
Jack Wood (32) and Sam Yabsley (18*) put on a last wicket stand of 48 before Wes Agar (3-50) closed Queensland’s innings on 210.
After losing three quick wickets, Victoria had slumped to 3-24 with Harper and Pucovski at the crease.
The pair combined for a much-needed partnership, steadying the ship and putting Victoria in good stead.
“The partnership was really good and Will played his part really well,” Loughman said.
Despite a three-wicket haul from Yabsley (3-17), Victoria required 32 runs for victory at the tea break.
Yet to be dismissed in the tournament, Blake Thomson (23*) combined with Adam McMaster (16*) to provide a handy contribution at the end of the innings, steering the team to victory.
Victoria will next face New South Wales in a two-day game commencing tomorrow.
“NSW are also undefeated, so it will be another challenge for the boys,” Loughman said.
