U14 Male State Champs: Breakers, Woinarski dominate day three

Led by a superb spell from Jakob Woinarski, the Breakers bowlers made it difficult for the Bulls to score, restricting them to less than two runs per over throughout the innings.

Woinarski finished with 4-7 from his eight overs, including six maidens.

Chasing the Bulls’ small total of 8-79, the Breakers got the job done with ease.

Steady knocks from Max James (26) and Sam McConchie (19) guided the team to the target, before Jared Williams (60) kicked on to improve the Breakers’ percentage.

Hamish MacCorquodale also chipped in with a valuable 25 not out.

The Breakers finished the ’round’ matches undefeated and will take plenty of momentum into their quarter final clash with the North East Knights today.

The Western Spirit is also yet to suffer a defeat in the tournament after making it three-from-three against the Central Highlands yesterday.

The Highlands won the toss and elected to bat, but quickly began to loss consistent wickets.

Opener Riley Vernon (21) held up an end for a while, but the pressure created by the Spirit’s bowlers was simply too much.

Mitchell Hearne (3-15), Blake Aggelis (2-14) and Alex Cesarios (2-20) were all multiple wicket takers.

In response, a 62-run opening partnership between Max Hatzoglou (26) and Hearne (34) set up the Spirit up nicely to go on and win the match.

A few quick wickets sent a scare through the batting order, but Matthew Watt (26*) was able to steer his side home.

The Spirit finished with 9-133 from its 40 overs, and will now face the South East Sharks in a quarter final today.

The Northern Rivers had a dominant victory over the Gippsland Pride, also winning themselves a place in the quarters.

Batting first, the Pride was restricted to 9-83 from its 40 overs due to tight and consistent bowling by the Rivers.

Callum McCarty (2-6 off 8) and Nick Gladman (2-9) were the standouts.

James Vlaeminck led the run chase brilliantly, opening the batting and seeing his side to victory with a nice knock of 48.

The Rivers passed the target just two wickets down, finishing with 7-140 from their 40 overs.

Skipper Todd Murphy made 27 at the top of the order while James Schischka (36*) consolidated after the result had been decided.

The Rivers will take on the Western Waves in one of today’s quarter finals.

The Inner South East Scorpions remain undefeated after a win over the Barwon Rockets.

Winning the toss and batting first, Max Stevenson set the tone for the Scorpions, coming in at number three and making a well compiled 66 before he was run out.

The team finished with a competitive total of 7-154.

The Rockets never really got going during their run chase, with Mitchell Ford (30) and Cooper Stephens (29) the only players to make starts.

Ultimately their scoring rate simply wasn’t high enough and a collapse of 3-0 towards the end of the innings certainly didn’t help their cause.

The Rockets finished their 40 overs with 9-114, 40 runs short of the target.

Riley Shaw (2-20) and Angus Robbins (2-21) were the major wicket takers for the Scorpions.

The Scorpions play the Southern Pioneers in a quarter final today.

In the remaining games:

The Western Waves 7-142 (Jackson 31, Withers 38, Scott 4-24) defeated the Inner East Emus 126 (Clarke 35, Bandara 4-12).

The Waves finish second in their group and will play the Northern Rivers in a quarter final.

The Southern Pioneers 8-212 (Chandrasinghe 74, De Silva 50, Gardner 3-19) defeated the Northern Falcons 6-110 (Rennie 34).

The Pioneers finish second in their group and will play the Inner South East Scorpions in a quarter final.

The North East Knights 5-144 (Ross 48, Sanford 36) defeated the Outer East Eagles 88 (Peter-Budge 46, McIntosh 3-6).

The Knights finish second in their group and will play the South East Bayside Breakers in a quarter final.

The South East Sharks 9-153 (Thomas 24) defeated the North West Wizards 107 (Butler 3-39).

The Sharks finish second in their group and will play the Western Spirit in a quarter final.
