U16 Male State Champs: Highlander Rogers scores 126 in big win

The Highlands won the toss and batted first, but lost both openers early, falling to 2-13.

Rogers, coming off the back of a 65 in the Highlands’ first match of the tournament, rescued the innings along Zac Jenkins (30) who played a brilliant supportive role.

When Rogers exited for a dominant 126, the score was 6-207 but the Highlands weren’t done yet.

Keeper Nathan Fowler’s 39 not out led the team to a total of 6-256 off its 50 overs.

In response, the Eagles never really looked like getting near the target as Darby Semmens (5-22) took a brilliant five-wicket haul.

Joel Robertson followed up his 48 in the Eagles’ previous match by playing a lone hand with 60 in this game.

It would be far from enough, however, as the Eagles were bowled out 100 runs short of the target, handing the Highlands their second win from as many starts.

The North East Knights successfully chased down the Western Spirit’s 167 thanks to a patient 105 not out from Caleb Barras.

Opening the batting for the Knights, Barras was rarely challenged as he led his side past the Spirit’s score with a well-measured innings.

Earlier, Spirit skipper Jordan Kight top scored for his side with 45 while Wade King (3-21) did the damage with the ball.

The Mallee Murray Bulls had their first win of the tournament as they held off the North West Wizards in an entertaining contest.

The Bulls lost the toss and were sent in to bat first.

Jarrod Brander hit seven fours on his way to an excellent game-high score of 81 and was well supported by Jack Oshea (36) in a 102-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

The Bulls were bowled out for 210 off the second-last ball of the innings.

The Wizards put in a fantastic effort with their run chase, but ultimately fell 25 runs short as they were dismissed at the end of the 47th over.

Ryan Stingel (42) and Zachary Mevissen (39) top scored for the Wizards while Jay Turlan took three vital wickets to finish with 3-33.

The South East Bayside Breakers defeated the South East Sharks in a thrilling run chase that saw Breakers’ skipper Blake Parsons getting his side over the line with an excellent unbeaten 64.

Winning the toss and batting first, the Sharks made an impressive 5-206 off their 50 overs thanks to a blistering 63 off 67 balls from Sam Fowler.

Nick Lloyd did his best to contain the score, taking 3-18.

During the Breakers’ run chase, it was the brilliant 116-run fifth-wicket partnership between Parsons and Harry Wardlaw that set up the exciting finish.

Wardlaw’s 64 included seven fours and a six.

With seven wickets down and needing 14 to win of the last five balls, the Breakers charged home to win off the last ball of the match.

In the remaining games, the Inner South East Scorpions 69 (Merlo 3-15) lost to the Inner East Emus 4-304 (Merlo 122, Boucher 58*, Rayner 58*, Milne 52), the Barwon Rockets 207 (Bingham 40, Slater 38) defeated the Western Waves 124 (McKinnon 27), the Northern Falcons 156 (Snelson 59, McGillivray 4-29) defeated the Gippsland Pride 62 (Volitakis 3-13, Edwards 3-13), and the Southern Pioneers 6-252 (Khattak 50, Battle 50) defeated the Northern Rivers 9-247 (Poppa 57, McGregor 43).

Today is the last chance for teams to win their way into the quarter finals that begin on Thursday.
