Under-15s title hopes end

Despite losing just one match, bonus points accumulated by other sides meant Victoria finished in third place, taking on New South Wales in the third place playoff today.

Queensland won the toss and batted first yesterday, making 114 before they were dismissed inside their 40 overs and in reply, Victoria made 50 before they too were all out without batting through their overs.

Annabel Sutherland and Bella Gietzmann opened the bowling for Victoria as they looked to extend their six-match winning streak.

It was first-change medium-pacer Sophie Van De Heuvel who got the breakthrough for Victoria as she trapped Charli Knott lbw for 11 with the score on 19.

Van De Heuvel then took a second wicket as she dismissed Queensland’s other opener, Isobel Hartog, for just two runs after one more run had been added to the total.

Erika Quinn then picked up the third wicket for Victoria as she had Lilly Mills caught by Scarlett Saxon-Jones for two with the sore on 28.

A strong partnership of 35 then ensued between Georgia Wright and Renee Irvine before Sutherland had Wright trapped lbw for nine.

Irvine was the next wicket to fall as Alana D’Aquino ran her out for an attacking 33 which included five fours.

The second run out of the match occurred with the score on 90 as wicketkeeper Madeline Stirling dismissed Annie Wikman for seven.

Rosie Wynd then picked up her first wicket as Neve Lynch was stumped by Stirling for 11 with Queensland on 97.

Gietzmann then joined the wicket-taking bowlers as she had Courtney Sippel caught behind for three after just two runs had been added.

Wynd brought her tally to three for the match as she had Kathryn Kidman caught and bowled for three and then bowled Sarah Grove for nought which saw Queensland all out for 114

Victoria finished bowling their 40 overs and Quinn took a second wicket with the score still on 114 before Queensland finished on 11-125.

Victoria began their chase well with a strong first-wicket stand of 35 between openers Sutherland and Van De Heuvel.

Sutherland was caught Knott off Lynch for five which triggered a batting collapse as two further wickets fell with the score on 35; Teagan Brett was bowled for nought by Lynch and Van De Heuvel was caught by Irvine off Mills for 20.

Wickets continued to fall as Victoria lost their last seven wickets for just 14 runs and were all out for 50.

With Victoria dismissed well inside their 40 overs there was a lot of time left in the game and so the innings continued.

Victoria finished on 20-146 after 39.4 overs and there were three standout bowlers for Queensland; Mills (5-29), Lynch (4-3) and Sippel (4-40).

This single defeat saw Victoria drop to third in the ladder and means they play NSW Metropolitan for third place in the competition today.
