Vics drop round one clash

A strong performance from Tom Russ could not save Victoria; bowled out for 114 chasing ACT’s modest first innings total of 144.

Russ (20*) managed to get Victoria’s tail into a winning position with the bat, having earlier taken 3-17 with the ball.

Chasing the small target, Victoria’s innings got off to a poor start, losing Liam Tonkin and skipper Meyrick Buchanan before the score has reached 10.

A further two wickets saw Victoria with its backs against the wall at 4-29, still 116 runs adrift.

Minor partnerships through the middle ensured Victoria would get close, however, a steady fall of wickets saw it fall 30 runs short.

Coach Shawn Flegler said while the result was disappointing, the players were keen to redeem themselves against Northern Territory today.

“You always like to start with a win for everybody’s confidence, unfortunately though we fell short yesterday,” Flegler said.

“One decent partnership probably would have seen us through; however, we just kept losing wickets at crucial times.”

While disappointed in his side’s batting performance, Flegler was happy with how his bowlers went about dismissing ACT under 150.

“We are really flexible with the ball. I thought Russ, (Ben) Ashkenazi and (Patrick) Ashton all bowled particularly well.”

Earlier, the Victorian attack put the ACT on the back foot from the start, with Ashkenazi taking two early wickets to reducing their opponents to 3-26.

Russ then capitalised on his early entry into the attack with two wickets of his own, before Ashkenazi claimed his third to reduce ACT to 6-72.

Two run outs complicated matters for ACT, but some defiant batting ensured they lasted the distance, with Buchanan taking the final wicket on the last ball of the innings.

The competitive total of 144 ensured Victoria would be made to work for the win, ultimately succumbing to the tight bowling of the ACT attack later in the day.

Victoria will seek redemption against the Northern Territory in the second and final one-day fixture of the tournament later today.
