VicSpirit Championships underway

With many of the Victorian under-15 team on show across the under-14 and under-16 tournaments, the day was always going to be set for some outstanding performances.

The under-16 Mallee Murray Heat, boasting three members from the Victorian under-15 team, surged to the top of Pool A with two strong wins.

Their opening victory against Northern Rivers provided what was to be the highlight of the day, with Luca Gallo taking an outstanding 5-16, including a hat-trick.

Gallo leads the competition wicket tally with six wickets, while her teammate and Victorian representative Rhiann O’Donnell, set the crease alight with 97 runs from the opening day.

Pool A looks to be hotly contested, with the Claire Nolte-led Western Waves also undefeated after day one.

Opening batter Alice Johnson fell two runs shy of her second half-century of the day during the Waves’ dominant round two win against the Rivers.

Johnson leads the competition run-scorers’ list with 99, while Victorian representative Nolte registered 50 and five wickets from her opening day of the carnival.

Pool B’s only undefeated team, Gippsland Pride, showed why they indeed may be the competition’s hardest team to beat.

Led by Victorian captain Sophie Molineux, the Pride systematically defeated both Eastern and Barwon, with four of their batters in the top-10 run-scorers after day one.

Heading into day two of the under-14 competition, six teams remain undefeated and in the box seat to claim a quarter-final berth this afternoon.

Pool A’s Western Waves capped off an undefeated day for the region, with Victorian batter Georgia Wareham racking up 82 runs, without being dismissed in the opening rounds.

The North East Knights booked their place in today’s live quarter-finals, as the only undefeated team in Pool B, while Pool C and Pool D will be decided today, with all undefeated teams matching up against one another.

Round three of the carnival continues this morning, while the quarter-final stage commencing this afternoon.
