Victoria’s under-15s finishes on a high at National Championships

NSW won the toss and batted first making 131 before they were dismissed in the 39th over and Victoria chased down the total for the loss of five wickets in the 37th over.

Opening bowler, Sophie Van De Heuvel and first change Erika Quinn were the standout performers with the ball as they took three for 27 and three for 29 respectively, while captain Annabel Sutherland shone with the bat as she made an unbeaten 61.

Bella Gietzmann opened the innings with her right-arm medium-pace bowling and struck early as she had Mariam Bank caught behind for a single with NSW on just two.

Van De Heuvel had the other opener, Bethany Jenkins, trapped lbw for six with the score on 14.

Captain Hannah Darlington and wicketkeeper Maddy Darke then shared a 28-run partnership before Quinn picked up her first wicket as Darke was caught by Rosie Wynd for five.

Quinn then took her second which was the important wicket of Darlington who was caught Wynd for 22 with the score remaining on 42.

A useful 25-run partnership between Olivia Porter and Isabelle Afaras then ensued before Wynd had Porter caught by Sutherland for 18.

A further 22 runs were added between Porter and Jessica Langford before Wynd struck in the field as she ran out Langford for seven.

NSW Metropolitan then had their best stand of the match as Afaras and Katie McCormack put on 32 for the seventh wicket before McCormack was caught by Clementine Ryan-Fuller off Quinn for 27.

With the score on 131 NSW then lost their final three wickets; Afaras was run out by Van De Heuvel for a well-made 39, Halle Hlasiuk was bowled by Van De Heuvel for nought as was Stephanie Marsh.

Chasing 132 Victoria opened with Van De Heuvel and Ryan-Fuller before Stella Campbell bowled Ryan-Fuller for six with the score on eight.

The early wicket saw Sutherland join Van De Heuvel at the crease and the pair shared an impressive 57-run stand before spin bowler Afaras bowled Van De Heuvel for 31.

Teagan Brett joined her skipper at the crease and the pair put on 26 before Brett was trapped lbw by Langford for 10 with Victoria on 91.

Alana D’Aquino came in at five and despite scoring only three runs was part of an important 19-run partnership with Sutherland.

Scarlett Saxon-Jones joined Sutherland at the crease and the pair put on 14 before Bank picked up her second wicket as she bowled Saxon-Jones for 12.

With just eight runs required for victory Wynd came in at seven and shared a ten-run partnership with her captain which saw her finish unbeaten on five and Sutherland an impressive unbeaten 61 as they ensured Victoria secured a five-wicket win.

At the conclusion of the tournament Hobart Hurricanes player, Julie Hunter, spoke to all the players and gave the awards for the leading run scorer, wicket-taker and the Player of the Championships.

Congratulations to Rachel Trenaman, who was the leading run scorer, and Lilly Mills the leading wicket-taker and especially Victoria’s captain, Annabel Sutherland, who was named Player of the Championships.
