Victoria crowned Open Women’s champions

Finishing on top of the ladder at the end of the round robin games, Victoria tested the up and coming South Australian line-up.

Batting first, South Australia got off to a solid start putting on 31 for the first batting pair.

However, from the fifth over, the Victorians dominated the innings taking regular wickets.

Victoria kept South Australia to 38 with Danielle Montague and Sharni Di Mauro starring with the ball.

In reply, Victoria reached 56 after eight overs with strong performances from Nicole Martin, Kerry Johnson and Jess Surace.

Briony Polkinghorne and Montague closed out the innings with 35, taking Victoria to 93 from their 16 allocated overs to claim the title.

Montague was awarded Player of the Final while Polkinghorne claimed Player of the Tournament and was named the Australian Player of the Year, receiving the Monika Brogan Medal.

Meanwhile, in the Lord’s Taverners division, Victoria was aiming for back-to-back titles in the 2014 Grand Final repeat against Queensland.

However, it was not meant to be as Queensland put on a dominant display to take the title, 99-26.

Adam Sims, Jarrod Connelly and Nathan Mahar were all named in the Lord’s Taverners All-Stars team.

Finally, in the men’s division Victoria completed the tournament in fourth position after being defeated, 116-74, by South Australia in the first semi-final.
