Victoria name Under-17 Country and Metro trial squads

Beginning in June, the winter training program will include four sessions, followed by two trial matches in August at an all-weather facility, before the final squads are announced ahead of the National Championships in Brisbane, running from September 26 to October 6, 2016.

“The four sessions running across June and July will have a strong focus on performance management and mental skills, as well as bat versus ball,” said High Performance Head Coach Jarrad Loughman.

“These skills will be key ahead of the National Champs, which is an exciting challenge for these 15 to 16-year-old boys, where they play as many as eight 50-over games in eleven days.

“Victoria’s first cycle with two squads proved a huge success, with plenty of opportunities for young Victorian talent as thirty-three players got a taste of National Championship cricket in excellent conditions.

“It was terrific to see Jon Merlo and Blake Parsons get selected for the CA Under-17 XI at the Under-19 National Championships, along with Mick Edwards being named an emergency.

“This was on the back of some strong performances by these young men at the Under-17 carnival and it highlights the genuine opportunity young cricketers now have.”

Vic Country Head Coach Matthew Elliott looks forward to his second year at the helm, and will look to use the experience of last year to help with the boys for the upcoming season.

“It’s a huge advantage to have seen it, touched it, and know what it looked like last year,” said Elliott.

“Having been there, it’s now about using that information to help the boys better prepare for this year.

“There’s the potential there for the boys to be as strong a group as last year in terms of sheer talent, then it’s just a matter of how well they prepare over the winter and how well they play when they’re away at the carnival.

“The boys put an enormous amount of pressure on themselves to perform, so it’s important to get them to relax and enjoy the time away too.”
