Partnerships hold the key: Flegler

Victoria will resume this morning at 1-7, requiring a further 315 for victory, with promising opener Mark Phelan falling to crafty Blues spinner Soumil Chhibber in the shadows of stumps last night.

While Flegler steered clear of putting the onus on any one of his young batsmen, he was acutely aware of the blueprint for victory.

“We need a 100-run plus partnership and a couple of 70-run partnerships,” Flegler said.

“That’s what we’re focusing on today.

“Wickets in hand will be crucial late in the day, but if we can navigate the first session and take the sting out of their attack, then we’re a chance.”

Frankston Peninsula quick Ben Ashkenazi again shone as he made two early inroads, swelling his carnival haul to 10 wickets at an average of 10, with new ball partner Matt Fotia also impressive.

When Sean Griffin also struck in the opening session, NSW was teetering at 4-55 before a 192-run partnership between Jake Doran (125) and Damien Mortimer (87) took the ascendancy away from Victoria.

“The effort from our bowlers throughout the day was great,” Flegler said.

“The two guys batted very well it was a good partnership.”
