Big Bash goes GLoBALL

This season, around 450 GLoBALL participants watched their first game of cricket when they attended the KFC T20 Big Bash League.

Launched in 2009, the GLoBALL program is a joint initiative run by Cricket Victoria and the Essendon Football Club.

Having attracted over 12,000 participants, the social inclusion program aims to use sport as a vehicle to introduce international students, refugees, asylum seekers and new migrants into the Australian community.

Visiting Melbourne’s biggest stadiums, the MCG and Etihad Stadium, this season’s participants attended two cricket games between the Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder and the Melbourne Renegades and Hobart Hurricanes.

Vietnamese international student Thuy Nguyen was among those to attend, hoping to learn more about Australian culture.

“I’m here for two years and want to experience as much as possible,” Thuy Nguyen said.

“Cricket is apart of the Australian life.”

Operating on an ambassador system, the GLoBALL program ensures that participants feel welcomed, supported, and included in the Australian sporting culture.
