Essendon and Monash Tigers to raise awareness for youth mental health issues in T20 match

Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation, providing early intervention mental health services to people aged 12-25.

Both teams will don brand new uniforms for the occasion, with the Headspace logo a prominent feature of both designs.

Essendon captain, Commonwealth Bank Bushranger and Headspace ambassador Aaron Ayre said the initiative was a highly important one which was strongly supported by both clubs.

“We were coming up with ideas to try and raise some awareness about mental health issues in the preseason,” Ayre said.

“We wanted to get cricket in the spotlight – in team sports people can sometimes hide their emotions, so we want to encourage people to put their hand up if they are struggling.”

Ayre, who made his first class debut with the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers in November, said that all the parties involved had been fully supportive of the initiative.

“Monash were really quick to jump on board as well as TNF who have sponsored the uniforms for the day – Headspace has helped with the planning so it’s been a really easy process”.

Headspace helps young people and their families through a national network of 85 youth friendly headspace centres and online and telephone counselling service eheadspace.

Headspace has helped hundreds of thousands of young people since its doors opened in 2006, but continue to work hard in ensuring that people get the help they need with suicide remaining the leading cause of death in 12-25 year olds.
