Harmony in Cricket is proudly Frankston

Run in conjunction with the major sporting clubs in the region, and leading businesses, the scheme will work on building strong relationships between local and Premier cricket clubs in the area and strengthening existing community links.

Sporting groups came together to discuss the idea at a Harmony in Cricket luncheon held at Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club on Sunday.

Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association (MPCA) committee members met with Frankston officials to forge links in the future and develop the next talent off the production line.

Recently, former Frankston stalwarts have moved back into the MPCA to help bring on the next crop of talent.

Darren Groves (Rye), Leigh Lowry (Boneo) and Nick Jewell are three big names who are still playing.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club General Manager Glenn Davey said everyone is pulling together in the right direction.

“Frankston is looked down upon as not being a classy suburb,” he said.

“But we want to change people’s perceptions. There is a lot to offer down here, the views down the bay are fantastic and we have high-class sport facilities in the area.

“The Harmony in Cricket luncheon was all about showcasing this and trying to raise the profile of the area.”

Frankston’s luncheon was organised to coincide with today’s Harmony in Cricket match between the Heat and Fitzroy-Doncaster.

Guest speaker was former Frankston, Seaford and Collingwood footballer Alan Wickes.

He is now ‘Proudly Frankston’ – a Frankston Dolphins initiative which was launched earlier this year.

It is designed to bring the people of Frankston together and showcase the city’s fine assets, use team sports as a catalyst for good behaviour and city pride.

“The Harmony in Cricket mantra and the basis behind the initiative was demonstrated to the attendees, with a large amount of signage reinforcing the message,” Mr Davey said.

“Alan is delighted with the Harmony in Cricket initiative, and how it closely links in with his ‘Proudly Frankston’ group.”

Meanwhile, Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers quick Scott Boland will line-up for the Heat tonight in its T20 fixture against Fitzroy-Doncaster from 5.15pm.
