A winning form

In contention for the Associated Public Schools title, St Kevin’s reaffirmed their form earlier this month when they defeated Trinity College by seven wickets in the Shield final.

Playing in the Twenty20 format, St Kevin’s chased down Trinity’s total of 102 in 18 overs.

An undefeated 60 by opening batsman Matthew Dervan saw St Kevin’s reach their target with only three wickets falling.

Last season, the school went undefeated to win the APS tournament, earning them a spot in this year’s Shield.

The return of five of the previous season’s year 12 students bolstered the side, giving them an opportunity to guide the younger students.

“Having the older guys come back for the final made it really enjoyable,” St Kevin’s coach Brendan Drew said.

“They were pretty excited to be involved.”

Having lost two matches in this year’s APS tournament, the Shield has provided the team with a chance to refocus.

St Kevin’s will vie for a spot in the 2014 Premier Schools Shield, when they continue to defend their APS title in the new year.
