All-girls T20 match hits the west

The match will be played between Altona Roosters under-11s and a team put together by Matthew Shawcross, deputy principal at Ardeer’s Mother of God Primary School.

Shawcross’ side will be made up predominately of girls of Sudanese descent that were looking for another local girls’ team to play against.

“A lot of the girls’ parents did not want their kids playing against boys so we organised this match to give the girls a chance to play,” Cricket Victoria Regional Cricket Manager Duncan Harrison said.

“We will use the match to launch female cricket in the area and spread the message that girls play too.”

Former Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit player Nat Schilov and Emily Smith, both from VWCA club Essendon Maribyrnong Park (EMP), will be on hand to help both sides.

“We have formed a link with EMP and Nat and Emily will be there helping with coaching,” Harrison said.

“EMP will also be running a training session at the Roosters in the next couple of weeks.

“Hopefully we get some girls out this match that will go through the Western Spirit pathway and play for EMP as well.”

The match will be played at Balmoral Reserve, Derrimut on November 14 from 5.30pm.
