Sunshine Heights wins Inclusive Club of the Year

Kelly Grigsby, Brimbank City Council’s General Manager of Community Wellbeing, told the packed crowd that Sunshine Heights sets a fantastic example for the district to follow.

“The Sunshine Heights Cricket Club has a long standing reputation for being inclusive,” Grigsby said.

“In the past year, it’s built upon this reputation by undertaking exceptional activities that were inclusive regardless of race, gender, financial status or ability.”

Grigsby said that Sunshine Heights Cricket Club’s achievements had included partnering with a group of Sudanese refugees who played park soccer to create the Sunshine Heights Western Tigers which came second on the ladder in its very first season.

“Its Ntini and Lewis teams are like the United Nations of junior cricket and both won their grand finals despite many of the players being new to cricket,” Grigsby said.

“It’s no wonder the club has attracted so much media attention from outlets as diverse as Channel 9’s Weekend Today Show, Seven News, ABC News, SBS World News, Fox Inside Cricket and 774 ABC Melbourne.

“Both Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia hail Sunshine Heights Cricket Club
as a model of how to provide sporting opportunities to young people from
multicultural communities.”
