Victoria announces women’s Indigenous team

Making Victorian Indigenous cricket history, the squad of 11 will be the first women’s team to represent the state at the Cup.

Former Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit player Renee Melton headlines the line-up, being named co-captain with veteran Fiona Hale.

With seven debutants in the side, Hale’s daughter, Merinda, also enters the squad, having recently returned from the School Sport Australia 12-and-under Cricket Championships.

Forming as a mother-daughter combo, the Hales will add to the team’s family connection with twins Ebony and Kirra Cuskelly returning for their second campaign.

Having played in last year’s Invitational XI, the Cuskelly twins will join
Napoleons-Sebastopol’s Jacinta Goodger-Chandler and Spotswood’s Kareena Jacobsen-Logan as returning tournament members.

With a strong cricket presence, under-18 state representative Natalie Plane and under-18 Gippsland Pride representative Loretta Chumbley will also strengthen the side.

Performing at club cricket, young guns Haley Chandler and Marlee Wandin round out the squad, providing fresh talent.

The Imparja Cup will take place in Alice Springs from February 9 to 15.
