Wight and Melton claim honours
Completing the tournament as the third highest run scorer, Wight earned a Black Cap after notching 175 carnival runs, including two half-centuries.
“It was a massive thrill and a big honour to get up there with some very good players,” Wight said.
The 31-year-old opening batsman impressed from the start, leading the InfoReady Victorian Imparja Cup team to victory in the opening round with a 68-run knock against Queensland.
Yesterday, the Ormond cricketer piled on 22-runs, combining with Nathan Gardiner’s unbeaten 35 to see Victoria take a 25-run win over South Australia and complete the tournament in fifth position.
“The results don’t reflect the ability of the players in the side so it was disappointing for everyone to walk away in fifth position,” Wight said.
In the girls’ division, co-captain Renee Melton was named as the sole Victorian in the Women’s All-star squad.
“It was an honour to be named in the squad,” Melton said.
The former VicSpirit player completed the tournament as the fourth highest run scorer with 86 runs, including a high score of 31.
Despite Melton’s 21-run knock and Natlaie Plane’s (2-9) strong efforts with the ball, the Victorians could not claim victory in yesterday’s semi-final, suffering a six-wicket loss to the Northern Territory.
In their first ever Imparja Cup campaign, the Victorians showed promising signs throughout the week, finishing in third position.
“It was disappointing to lose the semi-final but it was our first year and our first time playing together,” Melton said.
“There are a lot of talented girls in the team and we have a lot to work with.
“It’s a bright future for Victorian Indigenous cricket.”
