CV holds inaugural refugee indoor tournament

Launched to coincide with Refugee Week, the tournament featured four teams (Mighty Hoppers, Seeker Alliance, Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and Tamil All-Stars) who participated in a round-robin series before a Final in which the Mighty Hoppers were victorious.

More importantly, all players enjoyed the day with Cricket Victoria’s Multicultural Cricket Officer Waddington Mwayenga describing the day as a great success.

“It was the first time Cricket Victoria had done something like this,” Mwayenga said.

“All the participants had a great day and through word of mouth we hope to build for the next tournament.

“Next year we are hoping to grow to 10 teams.

Faraz Mahmood, who played on the day, said that seeing some of the younger participants’ skill level was a highlight.

“My team and I had a lot of fun,” Mahmood said.

“The thing that gave me the most joy was seeing those kids bat and bowl – such amazing talent and the kind of diversity that is great to see.

“I look forward to any future events.”
