Barooga series is ready to launch

With the National Championships on the horizon, there has never been a better time to shine for the under-17 and under-19 representatives.

“It’s obviously a difficult process to narrow that down to 12 players for each side, but we’ve managed to do it and we’re extremely pleased with the quality that we have assembled,” Loughman said.

With the trial matches used as part of the selection program for the National Championships later in the summer, Loughman will be keeping a close eye on many factors that will influence his decisions.

“Runs and wickets will carry a lot of weight…but just as importantly the way they manage themselves, the way they travel with the group, their interactions,” he said.

“It’s a rounded approach to what we want to get.

“We can garner some game sense out of the nets, but nothing replicates the middle…what we get to see in the middle is their mental capabilities in dealing with situations – dealing with getting launched or nicking off for a duck and having to come back the next day.”

Loughman stated that selection spots were wide open for those who perform in the series, making an example of last year’s wildcard – Tarrington all-rounder Sam Kerber.

“Sam was really good last year,” Loughman said.

“He bowled, batted and fielded beautifully in Barooga and put his hand up – so he’s a terrific example”

In the lead up to the National Championships, Loughman made no secret of his desire to replicate the success of the under-17 squad last year, particularly with the Under 19 World Cup around the corner.

“We want to cash in on the work of the Under-17s last year,” he said.

“If you’re going into win, and you have that winning mentality, it holds individuals in good stead. In saying that, we want to give individuals every opportunity.

“This is a massive tournament coming up for the Under-19s with the World Cup to follow and the squad being announced after the National Championships.”
